Me too! Totally cheesed off that once again I have missed out on the tickets. Come on UK !! I have one thing to say to you - "Why won't you listen?" - I cannot believe that the UK has so very few Kent fans. They listened to Abba in the 70s - 80's didn't they? So what's so wrong with Swedish music now?
Ingenting - Jag kan inte minnas någonting
Ingenting - Jag kan inte känna någonting
Simple reason, it's not in English and not really released in the UK and doesn't get any radio play therefore no one know who Kent are.
Problem is that Kent didn't go about their English releases right. They tried to break through into the US market which was a completely stupid idea. They were never gonna become popular in the US unless they persevered like crazy. Even popular UK bands like McFly, Travis, the Kooks, Libertines, maybe Idlewild, etc are almost unknowns in the US and popular British bands like Keane and Arctic Monkeys are hardly famous in America/Canada. The only UK bands that have become famous in America recently are Franz Ferdinand, Snow Patrol, and Coldplay and maybe Arctic Monkeys. And there's always Radiohead, etc.
What kent should've done is tried touring the UK, releasing their singles there and focusing more on gaining fame in the UK which was easily possible, specially considering how Brits have decent taste in music and would like kent if they ever heard of them.
I think they got seduced by the fact they were getting unexpected radio play in the States, and also I guess it's somewhat down to how interested the UK/US/other European arms of Sony BMG were and who else they had on their rosters then to compete with them for attention, and so how much of a push they would give them. And at the time, especially in the States, all that dance/rap bollocks was on the up. Bad timing really.
Having worked in UK record companies myself I know that new foreign bands often got only cursory attention, due to things like their original A&R man being abroad and that it's harder to form relationships with foreign bands/management because you have no time with them before the release, so you don't feel the same commitment to or knowledge of the personalities and music, and it's harder to get a handle on how and who to sell them to. And of course they're gone in a couple of days or weeks at most as well. So unless you find some key people in the company who really love the music it's likely that the press and promotions etc people would give them less time and effort than home-grown bands.
Having said that, I was surprised at the time that they didn't do more in the UK as they got a lot of radio play here too, especially 747 - but only did one very short tour which isn't really enough. Trouble with the UK is the amount of competition you're up against. I think their undoubted quality would have won out in the end but it needed more effort from the record company and from the band too. But then if you're playing stadiums in Scandinavia it must be a tad dispiriting to go back to playing half-empty, crummy venues in the likes of Middlesbrough (possibly one of the worst places in the world. I remember seeing bands glassed off stage there in my youth. I can see why it gave them a less than positive impression of my green and pleasant land..!)
Anyway hindsight is a wonderful thing. And you never know, they may have turned out completely differently if they'd become the next U2. Could we really have got something as dark and wonderful as DOJD if they'd got all mega rich and famous?!
I think you've all hit the nail on the head. In the 80's British bands were as popular if not more popular than the American bands of the time, especially in the Pop genre as they had a unique sound that appealed to so many Americans, myself included. But nowadays in America, as I'm sure is also the case in the UK, the industry really is flooded. There are so many great local-garage bands within the US that play some amazing shit, and yet you'll never hear them anywhere else but at local gigs. Plus lately America has been real big on promoting anyone who was trained to sing by Disney and was a friggin mouseketeer. My country is in a serious rut right now musically (and in any other number of ways but I'll avoid the politics for the sake of the forum ), everyone wants to copy one another and make music a formula business in order to guarantee a certain level of success. I can't even go to a baseball game here without hearing every female singer singing the Star Spangled Banner as if they were Christina Aguilera, same GD voice (UGGGHH!). This really crushes the creativity. So many musicians here nowadays don't even write their own music, but it is written for them. Sorry for going on a spiel here.
But...
Tack Gud för Kent!

I'm not even up to date with the music in America. It's not like MTV or VH1 ever plays music. It's crap crap crap crap crap.
I went to an Interpol concert the other night and I didn't even know their music. I suck.
