THat Flixster site helps a bit. Apparently there's a new one called Arn or someat but it's not on dvd yet and us North American's can only watch Swedish films from download.

SO I got Hip Hip Hora (Ketchup Effect) and Kopps, with English subtitles, and they're decent but nothing special. German movies are still the best European ones I've seen so far I guess. Last one I saw, Die Fetten Jahre Sind Vorbei (The Edukators) was top notch.

Netflix actually got some swedish and scandinavian movies. But there are very few good swedish movies in general.

I would say there are very few good movies in general. We've had the Christmas holiday in the Netherlands, and off all the movies being played, maybe one or two were really worth watching. All the others, 70th time for Die Hard, Hugh Grant flashing his blue eyes, etcetera .

Yeah, "Det sjunde inseglet" is good and other movies by Ingmar Bergman of course.

As for modern films, I'd say "Fucking Åmål" is probably the most well-known and a good film I'd say.

In general I'd say most swedish films are quite bad, or at least nothing special, but I can however recommend "Ondskan", "Smala Sussie" and "Lilja 4-ever". I really like them all. Especially "Ondskan", which is based on a novel by Jan Guillo and directed by Mikael Håfström, who also directed "1408", if someone has seen it, I haven't...
    Also "Kopps" is quite good..
Haven't seen "Arn", but I will soon.. Hehe

Yep, have to agree with Solstickan on those ones, I would also add Moodyssons "Tillsamans" or Together. My fave Swedish film is still "Mitt Liv Som Hund" or My Life As A Dog, just brilliant.

Never managed to find Zingo on dvd yet either!

I recently watched a Danish movie called "Efter Bryllupet" : "After the Wedding" , with Mads Mikkelsen, it was brilliant! Would highly recommend it, one of the main characters speak Swedish throughout (if you find Danish a bit hard to listen to and understand, like I do!)

    I recommend "Den man älskar".
btw, if you like scandinavian movies and you live close to the north of Germany, there is the "Nordische Filmtage" in Lübeck every year in the beginning of november. been there a few times and I think it´s great.

    Yes. Mikael Persbrandt superstar!

I recommend also "Den demokratiske terroristen" med Stellan Skarsgård.
And, of course, Bergmans mästerverk "Smulltronstället".

I'll agree with this one too! 'mitt liv som hund' is fabby. Ondskan (evil), is very good too, but there's a bit of violence in there which some people might not be too keen on. 'masjävlar' (darlecarlians) is also a good film, maybe more of a woman's film though!

has anyone seen 'du, levande' (you, the living) yet? it's showing in glasgow next month (as part of a film festival), and I hope to be going to the showing. it's just won loads of guldbagge awards.

I bought Masjävlar a couple of months ago, really good film. Still haven't seen Ondskan yet, will get round to it soon. My 2 recent buys have been Bang Bang Orangutang (poor) and Fucking Åmal (not bad). Iv'e been trying to get my hands on that dvd for some time now, couldn't get the english version (Show Me Love) anywhere, but now i'm living in Umeå it's a whole lot easier!

I just saw Smala Sussie. Really interesting movie, not bad but a wee boring in the 1st half. And I also saw a Swedish produced Russian movie called Lilja 4-Ever, which is really sad but also a pretty decent movie.
